Marquês de Pombal is the roundabout and square at the top of Avenida da Liberdade, marked by a column and statue of the Marquis of Pombal looking toward the river. It’s one of Lisbon’s main traffic and metro hubs, served by the Blue and Yellow lines, and the gateway to Parque Eduardo VII, which sits just behind it.
What to see nearby
Parque Eduardo VII. Lisbon’s large formal park sits directly north of the square. Walk up the central lawn — trimmed into a geometric pattern — to the viewpoint at the top, which looks straight back down Avenida da Liberdade to the river and, on a clear day, across the city.
Avenida da Liberdade. Heading south from the square, this is Lisbon’s grand boulevard: wide mosaic pavements, plane trees, and the flagship stores of the luxury end of the city. It’s a pleasant walk down toward Restauradores and the historic centre.
Amoreiras skyline. A longer walk west brings you toward the Amoreiras towers, one of the more distinctive modern additions to Lisbon’s skyline, visible from the park’s upper paths.
How to get there
The square sits directly above Marquês de Pombal metro station, an interchange between the Blue Line (Azul) and the Yellow Line (Amarela) — one of the easiest points in the city to reach without a car, and a natural stop if you’re already moving between downtown and the newer business district to the north.

It’s more of a landmark and transport hub than a standalone attraction, but the statue and column are worth a look, and Parque Eduardo VII just behind it has one of the city’s best viewpoints back down Avenida da Liberdade.
